Glacier clear ice bands indicate englacial channel microbial distribution

چکیده

Abstract Distant glacial areas are interconnected by a complex system of fractures and water channels which run in the glacier interior characterize englacial realm. Water can slowly freeze these where slow freezing excludes air bubbles giving ice clear aspect. This is uplifted to surface ablation zone movements therefore be observed form bands. We employed an indirect method sample coring were able, for first time, compare microbial communities sampled from (i.e. frozen bands) cloudy meteoric ice) through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Although primarily shaped structured their spatial distribution on glacier, type was secondary factor. One area particular, presented significant community clear/cloudy differences. supraglacial showed typical cold-adapted communities, had less defined ubiquitous environmental organisms. These results highlight role dispersion within and, possibly, shaping communities.

Rheology of glacier ice.

A new method for calculating the stress field in bounded ice shelves is used to compare strain rate and deviatoric stress on the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The analysis shows that strain rate (per second) increases as the third power of deviatoric stress (in newtons per square meter), with a constant of proportionality equal to 2.3 x 10(-25).

Seismic and GPR surveys of Mullins Glacier, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: ice thickness, internal structure and implications for surface ridge formation

We present results from ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and seismic surveys for the Mullins Valley debris-covered glacier (Mullins Glacier), Antarctica, that yield local ice-thickness estimates of 80–110m in upper Mullins Valley and 150m in upper Beacon Valley. Englacial debris in upper Mullins Glacier occurs as scattered cobbles and as discrete layers. One extensive englacial debris layer, whic...

Greenland outlet glacier ice - flow variability

1 I ce mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet is a primary contributor to global sea level rise. The rate of ice loss has accelerated over the last couple of decades and Greenland currently contributes about 0.7-1.1 mm/yr to sea-level rise (260-380 Gt/ice per year; Enderlin et al. 2014; Shepherd et al. 2012). Predicting the potential rate and limits of future mass loss requires a clear understa...

An ice-sheet-wide framework for englacial attenuation from ice-penetrating radar data

Radar inference of the bulk properties of glacier beds, most notably identifying basal melting, is, in general, derived from the basal reflection coefficient. On the scale of an ice sheet, unambiguous determination of basal reflection is primarily limited by uncertainty in the englacial attenuation of the radio wave, which is an Arrhenius function of temperature. Existing bed-returned power alg...
